Hero Nag's Annapurna dreams shattered? February 10, 2010 The grandiose plans of film hero
Akkineni Nagarjuna to build a mega entertainment complex in place of Annapurna
studios in Banjara Hills have come crashing down, thanks to the Airports
Authority of India.
With the AAI declaring that the elevation of the studio site itself was beyond
permissible limits, it has become evident that Nagarjuna cannot take up any
construction there.
On the basis of the AAI letter (AAI/HY/ATS/-59/NOC-2), the GHMC has denied
building permissions to the star.
Sources said Annapurna Studios initially planned to build structures that were
30 metres in height. As per rules, structures of only 15 metres height are
allowed in Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills. The government can relax rules in
certain cases.
The Annapurna Studios approached the municipal administration and urban
development department seeking relaxation of rules. The MAUD, in turn, sought
the opinion of the GHMC.
In the meantime, Annapurna Studios, apparently anticipating relaxation of rules,
applied for an NOC from the AAI.
“Since 30 mts height belongs to the high-rise category, GHMC will insist for AAI
clearance and the studio probably wanted to avoid delay,” said a senior
official. The AAI refused.
Keeping the AAI rejection under wraps, Annapurna Studios changed tack and
directly approached GHMC seeking permission for structures of up to 15 mts, for
which no NOC or relaxation is required.
The GHMC would have sanctioned it in a jiffy. However, the AAI had sent a copy
of its letter to the studio management to the civic body too. The town planning
officials rejected building permission even for 15 mts.
Annapurna Studios belonging to Nagarjuna’s father and thespian Nageswara Rao,
who reportedly used his influence with YSR to bend rules and get permission for
an entertainment complex.
